KEYS100: NEW FOR 2010--OPTION FOR RACERS IN INDIVIDUAL 100 AND 50 MILE RACES TO COMPETE WITHOUT A SUPPORT CREW
Responding to requests from experienced ultra-runners from around the world, the 2010 KEYS100 will allow experienced runners to race without a dedicated support crew. Although a crew is highly recommended and this remains a self-supported race, a new drop-bag system will be in place for those who wish to challenge the course on their own. For un-crewed runners, mandatory check-in sites will be set-up at ten mile intervals. These runners will have access to personal drop bags at each of these locations, and water will be provided. At the pre-race meeting in Key Largo on Friday evening, collection boxes will be placed for each aid station. Un-crewed runners will have the option to put drop bags in all, some or none of these check-in site containers, as they wish. Bags will be transported to each site and handed to the runner by race volunteers as each arrives. After the race, bags will be delivered to a central site in Key West to be retrieved by the runner. (Personal luggage will be collected race morning and delivered to Key West for pick-up by un-crewed runners upon completion of the race.) Check the race website for further details and for available transportation post-race from Key West to Key Largo and Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports.
NEW WEBSITE FORUMS ON THEIR WAY
Each race website (www.keys100.com and www.palm100.com) will shortly feature a discussion forum. The KEYS100 forum will include four distinct topical areas:
1. Relay teams looking for runners and unaffiliated runners searching for
a team
2. Individual runners looking for support crew and volunteers willing to
crew
3. Transportation from Key West to Key Largo and the Miami and Fort
Lauderdale airports: people looking for a ride and those who have
room in their vehicles and may want to share expenses.
4. General discussion.

Pre-race packet pick-up and required pre-race meeting will be held on Friday, May 14th, at the new Murray E.Nelson Government and Cultural Center, 102050 Overseas Highway, Key Largo. Pre-race meeting begins at 7:00 and will last approximately one hour. Check the race website, www.keys100.com for further details.
POST RACE PARTY IN KEY WEST
The post-race awards party will be held at noon, Sunday, May 16th, in Key West. Two locations are under consideration and the final decision will be announced on the race website well before race weekend. The important thing to note is the earlier time for this year’s event to accommodate many more people who need to depart Key West that day. Lots more details to follow.
RACE HOTEL, PRE-RACE MEETING AND POST RACE PARTY LOCATION, PALM100
For the second year, the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, located on State Route A1A just south of Las Olas Blvd., will be the official race hotel. CHI RUNNING CLASSES
Our friend, Dr. Alan Miller, has asked that we provide everyone with information about his next series of Chi Running Classes to be held in Cooper City, FL, near Fort Lauderdale, beginning December 1st. I am incorporating Chi Running principles into my own running and recommend that you check it out. If interested, contact Dr. Alan Miller at chitraining@bellsouth.net, or by calling 954-295-4789 (C) or 954-252-7504 (O), for further details.
DR. CHRIS ROMAN’S WORK WITH CAF
Our UltraSports races raise money to combat prostate cancer, working closely with The Richard J. Fox Foundation. We also encourage participants to run for whatever their favorite cause might be. Chris Roman finished 7th in 2009 in the 100 mile race at the KEYS100. Chris and wife Erin are actively working in support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (“CAF”). Chris will be running a “Double” at the Jacksonville Bank Marathon on December 20th, running the route twice, or 52.4 miles, for CAF. Also, on April 19th, 2010, Chris and several other CAF supporters will be running a double Boston Marathon in support of the same mission. Check out the Challenged Athletes Foundation and Chris’ fundraising efforts at http://teamcafflorida.kintera.org/4wardmotion.
INVITATION TO POST NEWS
From time to time we will distribute Newsletters to update people about our races and related subjects of interest. These might include notices like those above, or stories about interesting races that one of you has run. If you have a favorite event, or story about an extraordinary adventure or running accomplishment, please let me know. I can’t commit to publishing everything, but promise to give your information every consideration.
ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS!
